Petersburg National Battlefield is known for the siege of Petersburg which consisted of nine and a half months and 70,000 causalities. Petersburg was an important supply center for Richmond, the Confederate capital. General Ulysses S. Grant cut off all of Petersburg’s supply lines, ensuring the fall of Richmond. Around a week later, General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. At 2,762 acres Petersburg National Battlefield focuses on a balance between the cultural and natural aspects of preservation. Almost 90% of the park is wooded, with the most popular trees being yellow poplar, sweet gum, white oak, and loblolly pine. Different habitats include coastal plains, old fields, and more.
