Step back into history at Manassas National Battlefield Park to learn about two major battles of the Civil War and see where they took place.
Manassas National Battlefield Park is on 5,100 acres of land preserving history and educating those who visit the park. In 1861 Union and Confederate armies met for the first major land battle of the civil war for the first battle of Manassas, also called Bull Run. Less than 30 miles from Washington D.C., the Confederates won this battle and the Union soldiers retreated back to the capital. In 1862 Confederate and Union forces met again for the second battle of Manassas. The Confederacy won this battle, and it boosted their confidence and helped open the way for the first major invasion of the north. There are more than 40 miles of hiking trails in the park with loop trails that traverse the key areas of the First and Second Manassas Battlefields. The park is home to several distinct forest types which played a key role in shaping battles at Manassas by concealing troops, proving cover, and creating obstacles to maneuver through and around.
