Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is a 42500 acre park in northern California that is administered by the National Park Service. The major focal point of the area is the 3200 acre Whiskeytown Lake, which is a reservoir created as part of the Central Valley Water project. There are numerous recreational opportunities on the lake, as well as over 70 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails across the Recreation Area. Rugged topography, numerous soil types, variable weather, and periodic disturbances have influenced the formation of Whiskeytown’s biotic communities and the diversity of species in them. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area was designated by congress in 1965 as part of the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area. The Shasta and Trinity units of the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area are administered separately by the United States Forest Service.
