Visit the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States at Congaree National Park.
Waters from the Congaree and Wateree Rivers sweep through the floodplain, carrying nutrients and sediments that nourish and rejuvenate this ecosystem and support growth of national and state champion trees. Opportunities for recreation in the Congaree wilderness include hiking, paddling, fishing, birding, and backcountry camping. Congaree National Park helps preserve natural landscapes and the diverse plant and animal life they support, as well as allowing visitors to experience and learn about what makes them so unique, as well as why they are worth saving.
