On the Dakota Prairie Grasslands pristine vistas inspire the imagination; the rugged unspoiled beauty of the land invites exploration; and the sights and sounds of the wide, rolling prairie stimulates the senses.
The Forest Service currently administers twenty National Grasslands consisting of 3.8 million acres of public land. These grasslands are managed for various purposes, including forage, fish and wildlife, timber, water, and recreation resources. The Dakota Prairie Grasslands proudly enjoys an extensive and colorful history and prehistory. Cultural resources on the grasslands have been found dating from approximately 11,500 years before the present (BP) to the recent past. The Dakota Prairie Grasslands offers a wide range of recreation experiences to enjoy. From special places to breathtaking views, there is something for everyone!
